You must have watched Sherlock holmes or the mentalist & became captivated by their ability to retain information, by using this fascinating memory technique called memory palace right?

Well i am also just like you, i also got charmed by this amazing memorization technique.when i watched Patrick jane from the mentalist, i was always in awe with his abilities & one them was his phenomenal memory to recall any information he wanted from his memory.

Then a thought occured in my mind, if i can build & use memory palace like them, then i can improve my memory significantly too, same goes for you!

I got another good news for you! Memory palace isn't really that hard to build, by the end of this post, you will already have build your memory palace & you will be blowing people's mind with your memory palace, just like Sherlock holmes & Patrick jane.

Let's have some basic understanding of memory palace so, that it will be easier for you to construct one.

How does memory palace works?

What you do, in order to build a memory palace in your mind, you create or use already created locations to hold your information through your imagination & organize them sequentially & as neatly as possible.

There are two different ways you can build a memory palace!

  • by creating the whole palace with your imagination, which is kind of hard specially for beginners.
  • by using locations that you already have memorized in your mind as memory palace!
i will be talking about the 2nd method in this post cause, it's easy to use & fast to  learn.

In case you are wondering, do you even have already memorized locations to use for memory palace? then the answer is yes, you do!

Think about your home, you can already tell how many rooms are there, what sort of different furniture is placed in different rooms.

Your home is not the end! you can also use your friends house, school buildings, buildings, even markets etc, its all about how creative you are with it.

Let's build your memory palace now!

I will be using rooms as example.

As you already know, you have beforehand memorized locations for your memory palace all remains is to select and assign numbers sequentially on every 5 pieces of furniture in each room.

It's important to choose objects that always remain in your room & are big in size because, it's easier to place and retrieve data.

One more thing whenever you go through your memory palace, always go in one & same chosen direction.

If you choose to go with clockwise then always walk in your memory palace clock wise direction, if you choose anti-clock wise then always walk anti-clockwise direction, this is necessary!

For example:-

I have 2 rooms:-
  • 1st one has a fridge, washing machine, closet, bed, big mirror.
  • 2nd one has big cabinets, standing fan, iron table, tv and computer.

Assigning each furniture a number:-

I prefer to walk in clock wise direction, i always see fridge 1st in that direction.
So my 1st location to hold info will be fridge.

2nd i see washing machine, so 2nd location to hold info is washing machine.

Just like that i walk through whole room, name 5 objects & move on to next room. After moving to next room, i name other more 5 objects just like, i did in previous room.

After assigning two rooms, i will have total 10 locations constructed to hold my info.

I have used two rooms as an example to make it easy for you.

You can assign every room's objects in your house.if you have 6 rooms you will end up with 30 locations to hold your info.

Now how to hold/memorize information?

You have already created your memory palace and assigned numbers to object, that was the hard part, this part is easy.

Whatever is that you wish to memorize, just connect or associate it with your object in your constructed memory palace by using imagination.

of course i will give you example:-

Say you wanna memorize a list of 5 items carrot, fish, tooth paste, jacket, can food.
  • Place the 1st item into 1st location of your mind palace with your imagination.1st item is carrot & 1st location is fridge, just imagine a big carrot is dancing & twerking in front of your fridge like crazy.
  • 2nd is fish, 2nd object is washing machine, now imagine a big white fish standing in front of machine and washing clothes.

Follow the whole list with similar pattern & you will be surprised by it's magic.

Also this is just a basic application of the amazing memory palace, you can do much more with it like memorize speeches, books, huge mount of numbers, use it for exams & much more!

I cannot teach all of those techniques in this post because it will become super long & boring to read.
